The Historical Herbalists CIC bring the history of herbal medicine to life through immersive, hands-on living history displays, demonstrations and workshops. Portraying traditional healers, herbalists and apothecaries from Roman Britain and the Anglo-Saxon and Viking eras, through the Medieval and Renaissance periods, to the 17th, 18th and early 20th centuries, we explore medicinal plants native to the British Isles alongside those introduced through centuries of cultural exchange.
The historically researched apothecaries feature authentic replica tools, reproduction manuscripts, traditional remedies, and living and foraged herbs, creating colourful, detailed and interactive displays. Our richly detailed historical apothecaries engage all the senses, featuring living and foraged medicinal plants, authentic replica tools, reproduction manuscripts, scrolls and traditional remedies.
Drawing upon historical texts, archaeological evidence and experimental archaeology techniques, we explore the medicinal plants native to the British Isles alongside those introduced by the many peoples and cultures who shaped our healing traditions. With a particular passion for uncovering the often-overlooked histories of women and traditional healers, we offer an engaging, educational and interactive experience for visitors of all ages. We regularly collaborate with educational institutions, nature, and heritage organisations to deliver high-quality, historically informed events, workshops and immersive learning experiences.
